A useful AI answer gives you something to work with. A clear source trail gives you something to review.
An answer can be fluent, well organised, and easy to read. The more useful question is whether another adviser can follow the work behind it. That is where a considered review begins.
Start with the question.
Before reviewing the response, return to the brief. Which jurisdiction and period matter? What facts have been established, and what is still an assumption? A response to a slightly different question can look convincing while leaving the original problem unresolved.
Write those boundaries down. Use them as a short reference throughout the review, so the question stays connected to the answer.
Follow the source trail.
Open the sources behind the material points. Read the surrounding passage and consider whether it supports the conclusion being drawn. A citation helps you find the evidence; checking that evidence remains part of the work.
Keep a note of missing context, qualifications, and points that need a further question. If the source does not support the claim, make that visible rather than carrying the uncertainty into a draft.
Make judgement visible.
Separate the facts supplied by the client, the authorities you have reviewed, and the judgement applied to connect them. Those distinctions help the next reviewer understand which parts of the analysis are established and which depend on an assumption.
A useful handover preserves the question, the relevant documents, the source references, and the points that remain open. It should make it easier for a colleague to challenge the reasoning.
Carry the review forward.
As research becomes advice, keep the source trail close to the draft. Revisit any conclusion affected by a change to the facts, the scope, or the intended audience. An earlier review should inform the next stage without becoming a reason to stop asking questions.
The goal is a piece of work that another professional can inspect, understand, and build on. The answer is the starting point for that process.
